Australia and Ontario – Mutual Recognition of Driver’s Licences Arrives

Toronto – Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Kathleen Wynne, has announced a reciprocal
exchange of driver’s licences with Australia effective January 25, 2010.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Concerning the Exchange of Driver’s Licences by
Australia and Ontario allows a person who has held a Class C or R driver’s licence in Australia
upon becoming a resident of Ontario, to exchange that driver’s licence for an Ontario Class G or
M driver’s licence.

Individuals requesting an exchange are required to submit proof of identity, produce a driver
abstract from home state or territory issued in the last six months and surrender their Australian
driver’s licence. They must also pass a vision test, comply with all medical requirements as
established by Ontario and pay any fees that are prescribed by the laws of Ontario. The
Australian driver’s licence will be returned to Austroads after the exchange is completed.
The Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce is pleased to mark yet another step in the
growing partnership between the two countries. In the last year, Australia achieved the rank of
fourth largest Foreign Direct Investor in Canada (after the U.S., U.K., and Netherlands); two-way
investments now exceed AUD $37 Billion. Canada is the eighth most important foreign investor
in Australia.
